Privacy applies to the person
Confidentiality is concerned with how we treat information about an individual
- Usually linked to a person’s personal information
- Federal and provincial laws protect collection and use of personal information like name, address, age, gender,Personal Health Number, etc. (business or employment contact information is NOT personal information)
- OCAP- principles regarding privacy that supports the First Nation community/group to own, control, access and possess information about their people or membership; tied to self-determination
Confidentiality is concerned with how we treat information about an individual
- Extension of privacy
- Relates to the how we store, handle and manage information that an individual has disclosed in a relationship of trust
- Puts controls on how and when certain information will be shared with or outside an organization and between health care providers
